| Abstract | "From the moment that the young Arturo Toscanini first stepped into the public eye in Rio de Janeiro in 1886, it was recognized that a new and important talent had entered the world of music. Only twelve years later, after developing both his techniques and his reputation, he was appointed musical director of La Scala, a role in which his tenacity, brilliance and unrivalled stamina combined to effect lasting transformations in the world of Italian operatic performance. His influence soon extended world-wide as he travelled extensively and exhaustively, carrying a new artistic morality to the concert halls of Europe and America as he performed with some of the world's greatest orchestras. Harvey Sachs, a conductor who has had a lifelong interest in Toscanini, has meticulously researched the extraordinary events of this man's life. Travelling to many countries to glean exclusive information from Toscanini's friends, family and associates, he has also drawn on the vast amounts of material uncovered since Toscanini's death--hitherto largely unpublished--including the musician's correspondence with some of the important figures of the day: Strauss, Debussy, Ravel, Puccini, Einstein and Cosima Wagner. | Biographical note | "Harvey Sachs was born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1946 and started to study the piano at the age of eight. He continued piano and related studies for the next ten years at the Cleveland Institute of Music and the Mannes College of Music in New York. In 1967 he joined the conductor's workshop at Toronto University, where he won the Heinz Unger Prize for Conducting in 1970. Canada Council awarded him a grant which enabled him to study conducting with Louis Fourestier in France in 1971 and Martin Turnovsky in Austria in 1972. He has been a guest lecturer in music at the Canadian universities of Toronto, Trent and Peterborough (Ontario) Symphony Orchestra from 1972 to 1975. In 1973 he wrote a two-hour documentary on the life and music of Toscanini which was broadcast on Canadian radio, and he has also written more than a hundred hours of radio broadcasts about Toscanini for American radio. Since 1975 he has been living in Milan, where, in addition to writing this book, he has been a guest conductor for several Italian orchestras."--Dust jacket. |
