545 a| Dallas Cline spent the first part of her childhood in Connecticut and then on the coast of New Jersey, in the days when the woods were still filled with holly trees. She delighted in the music her mother made on the mandolin and her grandmother's songs on the piano, but remembers just as fondly a great old wind-up phonograph and the 78 records of Carl Sandberg and Mac McClintock. After studying art in college she performed as a folksinger and teacher, working for a long period with the Connecticut Commission on the Arts creating assembly programs in the schools. Lucille Tasker, a friend, suggested that she make a book of all the simple instruments she had worked out while organizing jug bands with the children in her classes, and the result is this exciting project. At this point in life Dallas soaked up all she could in many areas, including a year spent with instrument-maker Mikael Carstanjen, and a serious study of voice development with Dr. Leon Kurzer. He family ran a weekly folk music coffee-house at the Connecticut Folk Arts Center.;
