Abstract The author takes a new look at some of the most characteristic elements in the music of the 1920s. There is special emphasis on the ballets and operas of the 1920s, and separate chapters devoted to the role of music in ballet (which the author believes to be underestimated) and to the use of speech and song in ballet. The book does not confine itself rigidly to the decade 1920-1929, but deals with the work of the precursors of the 1920s style and the "pilots" of the young. It also follows the later careers of composers who first came to prominence in the 1920s, and the influence of the spirit of the period on some younger musicians.
