Abstract It may safely be assumed that the readers of a general history of music will be persons who wish to learn something of the development of the Art of Music, and something of the lives of the men who have made important contributions to that development. The purpose of this little volume is to provide its readers with this information, presented in compact and, above all, readable form. The plan of the book, its entertaining narrative style, its completeness within the brief limits of less than two hundred pages, these are some of the features which make it suitable for class work (conducted either by private teachers or in high schools and junior colleges), for use in music study clubs, and for general reading. A glance at the chapter headings will reveal the wide scope of the work, which outlines the growth of music from ancient times to the present day. First published in 1923, the book has been thoroughly modernized and brought down to date through the revision of the last eight chapters, the final chapter having been completely rewritten. Especially valuable is the Reference List of important composers with their dates and nationalities which closes the book.
