Summary |
The purpose of this thesis is to suggest a framework for revision of the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NCSCS) in elementary visual art, including a sample revision of the kindergarten portion of the NCSCS. This thesis will be submitted to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction for review by the expert committee for revising the North Carolina Standard Course of Study during the information-gathering stage of the 2010 revision. The limitations of the current NCSCS for elementary visual art are described as major summary conclusions. This is included with a discussion of what can be learned from the visual art standards in other states, the elementary music NCSCS, and the supplementary materials provided for teachers of social studies in Cumberland County, North Carolina. Subjects that may influence the development of the new NCSCS are presented. These include a revised taxonomy of educational objectives, the standards based grading movement, standardized testing, the results of a small survey of art teachers in Wake County, and an analysis of the SRA Art Connections textbook series. Finally, recommendations are made for revision of the NCSCS. |
