Summary The purpose of this thesis is to examine Algebra I students' understanding and transference between multiple representations of linear functions utilizing an open-ended card sort combined with the SOLO taxonomy to characterize the level of student understanding. Topics addressed within this research include the role of technology, teaching practices, and student understanding with respect to multiple representations of linear functions. Products created within this research include six tasks focusing on multiple representations of perpendicular lines and a card sort designed around multiple representations of linear functions that highlights both parallelism and perpendicularity. Either of these tasks may prove useful to classroom teachers.
