| Summary | The Infraorder Mygalomorphae comprises a rich diversity of spiders, including tarantulas, trapdoor spiders, and their relatives, yet in North America, much of this diversity remains undescribed. The primary purpose of this project is to complete a systematic investigation of the trapdoor spider genus Promyrmekiaphila Schenkel 1950, one of eight genera within the subfamily Euctenizinae. There are currently three described species of Promyrmekiaphila, all distributed in northern California, but individuals in this genus exhibit little morphological variation. Members of this genus build underground burrows covered with a silken wafer-like trapdoor. The fossorial nature of these spiders makes them highly susceptible to environmental perturbation, and encroaching urbanization threatens the continued existence of many populations. This project includes two main objectives. First, the distribution of the genus is characterized using museum and field-collected specimens. As part of this objective, an ecological niche modeling approach, GARP, is employed and tested for accuracy. Second, species delimitation in Promyrmekiaphila is explored using a novel approach that combines a Bayesian inferred phylogenetic reconstruction and multiple assessments of ecological data; species boundaries are proposed. |
