| Summary | The Ste. Genevieve Limestone of Wise and Lee counties, Virginia, outcrops along the limbs of the northeast plunging Powell Valley anticline and is dominated by oolitic lithologies. Three sections were measured and sampled, and are characterized by the presence of seven microfacies: oolitic grainstone, skeletal grainstone, oolitic packstone, skeletal packstone (sparry and mud-rich varieties), skeletal wackestone, and lime mudstone. Each microfacies was then associated with one of four genetic facies associations: shoal, restricted ramp/backshoal, intershoal/transitional, and open ramp/foreshoal. These associations were used to construct a depositional model indicative of a shallow, gently sloping ramp with bodies of ooid sand, punctuated by calm restricted lagoons and an open ramp environment seaward of the shoals. When compared to proximal studies, the differences in lithologic character and thickness of the Ste. Genevieve can be attributed to, along with eustatic sea level fluctuations, overall subsidence of the foreland basin in the east and subsequent upwarping to the west. |
