| Summary | Cape Lookout National Seashore (CENS) funded a hydrogeologic study to evaluate the groundwater resource potential near the Cape Lookout Lighthouse to install a 6-inch (in) water production well for fire suppression and drinking water purposes. The investigation phase involved drilling an exploratory bore hole to 450 ft below land surface (BLS), developing an understanding of the subsurface stratigraphy with a drilling log and geophysical logs, testing the water quality and potential yield of the aquifers penetrated by the borehole with a series of three test wells, and installing a production well in the aquifer with the best water quality and yield. A surficial aquifer system (0-137 ft BLS), a confining bed (137-345 ft BLS), and the confined limestone Castle Hayne Aquifer (345-452 ft BLS) were identified at the study area. Test well 1 (CL-TW-01) was screened 70-90 ft BLS in the unconfined aquifer system and produced saltwater (CF= 8,324.4-9,468.8 mg/1). Test wells 2 (CL TW-02) and 3 (CL-TW-03) were screened 360-380 ft BLS and 415-435 ft BLS respectively in the Castle Hayne Aquifer, and both wells produced fresh water (CF = 5.90-25.83 mg/1). Two preexisting wells were identified near the study area. One well (CL-LW-01) is screened 360-375 ft BLS in the Castle Hayne Aquifer and contains saltwater (C1- ~ 4,755 mg/1). Further investigation indicated that the source of the saltwater in CL-LW-01 was from either the lateral migration of the fresh water/saltwater interface towards the well, or the vertical migration of saltwater from the surficial aquifer through the ungrouted bore hole of CL-LW-01. The final production well (CL-PW-01) was screened 415-435 ft BLS in a high permiability zone of the Castle Hayne Aquifer to reduce the rate of lateral saltwater migration from CL-LW-01 towards the new production well. The final production well has a specific capacity of 12.48 (gpm/ft)24 hr* Water samples taken at the end of the 24 hour aquifer test had chloride concentrations of ~ 28 mg/L. New well series and Trihalomethane analyses of water samples taken from CL-PW-01 indicate two water quality parameters that exceed federal drinking water standards; high total dissolved solids (TDS) and high concentrations of disinfection by-products. Aerating the water will remove dissolved sulfide which will sufficiently lower the TDS concentration to meet federal drinking water standards. A chloramine (chlorine + ammonia) disinfection system will reduce disinfection by-products to acceptable levels. Safe and sustainable operation of CL-PW-01 requires actions to reduce the threat of saltwater contamination. CL-PW-01 should be pumped at no more than 25 gpm to minimize changes in the hydrostatic conditions of the Castle Hayne Aquifer, thereby reducing the chances of vertical and horizontal saltwater migration to CL-PW-01. The NPS should also determine the source of saltwater in CL-LW-01 and implement a well abandonment program to eliminate anthropogenic point sources of saltwater contamination into the Castle Hayne Aquifer. |
