Abstract "The present edition is a facsimile of the particelle of the 'Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune' of Claude Debussy. It is the definitive draft from which the orchestration was made, and the comparison of it with the printed orchestral score will render much insight into Debussy's technique of orchestration. The composer presented the manuscript to his 'chère et très bonne petite Gaby . . .' This is the same 'Mme. G. Lhéry' (her real name was Gabrielle Dupont) who later gave it to Alfred Cortot. She was Debussy's companion from 1890 to 1898. Since the affectionate dedicatory words were written the same month in which Debussy married Lily Texier and at least five years after the composition of the score, Marcel Dietschy's supposition that this gift constitutes a peace offering and gesture of atonement seems quite credible."--Foreword.
