| Abstract | The analysis of music has traditionally been focused on the art music of the Western world. It is generally based on music as notated and is poorly suited to repertories that are notated unconventionally or are not notated at all. The music of Asia has traditionally been unnotated and therefore little effort at systematic analysis has been made. The recent rise of interest in world music has precipitated serious efforts to describe, classify, and explain the inner workings of many Asian and Eurasian repertories, but fundamental problems of music representation often must be considered first. These same problems still confront the development of computer tools for early Western music, which predates the widespread acceptance of common Western notation. Common ground exists in the analytical needs of early music and non-Western music. This volume of Computing in Musicology considers approaches to the computer representation and analysis of early and non-Western music. It describes efforts to provide new tools that may make such work more practical in the future. It also brings fresh insights to the repertories themselves. XML is offered as one possible solution to the coordination of diverse representations from diverse repertories. |
