Abstract | This book not only examines Wagner's career as a conductor and the principles of his musical performance, it also considers many of the greatest figures of the central European conducting tradition, including Bulow, Nikisch, Mahler, Weingartner, Richard Strauss, Walter, Klemperer, Furtwangler and Karajan. In each case Holden, himself a former professional conductor, traces their rise from apprenticeship to international acclaim, comparing rehearsal technique, use of the baton and eye contact, repertoire, tempo, recordings, style and performance practice. |
