Abstract Documentary. The film recounts the history of the Acadian community of Louisiana. At the beginning of the 17th century, the peasants from west central France immigrated to the new world in order to flee the wars of religion and to create a new community in Acadia, today's Nova Scotia. Their dream of liberty and land was shattered by their deportation in 1755, called LE GRAND DÉRANGEMENT. During this exile, the ancestors of the Acadians (Cajuns) reunited with their families in south Louisiana. Isolated from the Anglo-American culture, the Cajuns maintained their identity and their language when faced with pressures of assimilation. They have created a living culture from music and cooking known world-wide.
