The bulk of the correspondence originated in South Africa, written by friend Georgie A. Grant (later Lamptough). Grant describes numerous tourist attractions in England; relations between refugees and the administration, as well as the living conditions, of concentration camps at Bloemfontein and Dewetsdorp in South Africa during the Boer War; and the problems of owning a South African gold mine. General topics include life during World War I and post war economic difficulties endured by the average British citizen; worldwide aspects of life during the early twentieth century; and weather and road conditions, means of land and sea transportation, and major tourist attractions of England, South Africa, Canary Islands, Australia, Canada, and the United States. Correspondence from William Hodge mentions World War I news and describes tourist attractions of Bombay, India, Burma, Ceylon, and Java. Also includes photographs from South Africa showing hospital washers, water tanks, ironing, and a group picture of the teachers.
