Sylvanus M. Hankins papers, 1811-1958.

Scope and content Collection consists of correspondence, a memoir, and genealogical and miscellaneous material. The bulk of the correspondence is between A. D. Peace and Samuel Peace concerning tuition costs, college sessions, attendance, and school life at Trinity College, North Carolina. Letters of Civil War soldiers provide accounts of the fighting in Washington, N.C. , a description of the Battle of Rappahannock Bridge and Kelly's Ford, Va., and information on the condition of the troops. Of particular interest is the memoir of Sylvanus M. Hankins, who describes his service as a Confederate soldier; civilian life during the Civil War; the actions of, and Confederate Army's methods of dealing with, Civil War deserters; the guarding of a blockade runner at Deadman's Bay; the Battle of Natural Bridge; a journey to Andersonville Prison to deliver captured Union soldiers; and Confederate treatment of captured enemy soldiers and runaway slaves. Also contains genealogical material for the Hankins family, muster roll of Company D 11th Florida Regiment, and family Bible records.

Biographical noteSylvanus M. Hankins (1847-1918) of Madison County, Fla., was drafted by the Confederate army at the age of 16. He served in Company D 11th Florida Regiment.
