Abstract University president and professor Samuel DuBois Cook was born on November 21, 1928, in Griffin, Georgia. Cook graduated from Griffin Vocational High School in 1944. He earned his A.B. degree in history from Morehouse College; and, his M.A. degree in political science and his Ph.D. degree from Ohio State University. Cook began his career in 1955 as a political science instructor at Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Later, he taught at Southern University, Atlanta University and UCLA. In 1966, he became the first African-American professor at Duke University in North Carolina. He won the university's first student selected award for most outstanding professor. In 1974, Cook was named president of Dillard University, where he served for twenty-two years. He retired in 1997. He received many honors and awards. In 2015, Duke dedicated the Samuel DuBois Cook Center on Social Equity in his honor. Cook passed away on May 29, 2017 at age 88.
