Abstract |
Educational consultant and former college president Leonard Dawson was born in 1934, in August, Georgia. Earning his B.A. degree from Morris Brown College and his Ed.D. degree from Columbia University, Dawson began his career as a high school teacher in 1954. He entered the world of higher education in 1967, at Paine College, and later worked for the U.S. Department of Education, serving as executive vice president of the R.R. Moten Memorial Institute and director of special projects for the United Negro College Fund. In 1985, Dawson was named president of Voorhees College, where he remained until he retired in 2001. Following his retirement, he was named a senior consultant to the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Dawson has been active with a number of professional and civic organizations, and in 2001 he was awarded the Order of the Palmetto, the highest civilian honor in South Carolina. |
