Abstract |
Music executive Mickey Stevenson was born on January 4, 1937, in Detroit, Michigan. In 1950, Stevenson and his younger brothers won Amateur Night at the Apollo Theater in New York City. Serving in the U.S. Air Force from 1956 to 1958, a performance by the Four Tops inspired him to return to music. Stevenson toured with Lionel Hampton as one of the Hamptones and worked as songwriter and producer for the gospel label HOB Records. In 1959, Stevenson accepted a position as head of artists and repertoire at Motown Records. He was responsible for the creation of the in-house studio band, the Funk Brothers, the Motown Revue's orchestra, as well as such classic acts as Diana Ross and the Supremes, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, and Martha and the Vandellas. From 1968, Steven served as head of MGM's Venture Records. Stevenson recorded Here I Am in 1972. |
