Abstract Government appointee, lawyer, and state senator Basil Paterson was born on April 27, 1926 in Harlem, New York. He received his B.S. degree in biology in 1948 from St. John's University; his J.D. degree from St. John's Law School in 1951. A stalwart of New York politics, Paterson was elected to the New York State Senate in 1965. In 1978, Mayor Ed Koch appointed him as Deputy Mayor of Labor Relations and Personnel. Governor Hugh Carey appointed him to the position of New York Secretary of State in 1979 making him the first African American to hold that position. In 1989, he became a commissioner of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, a position he held until 1995. Practicing law at the law firm of Meyer, Suozzi, English and Klein, he was co-chair of the firm's labor practice. Paterson passed away on April 16, 2014, at the age of 87.
