Abstract |
"I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth." But how can someone soar all the way to the Moon - two hundred and forty-thousand miles through space? America knows the answer to this question: teamwork. Over the two thousand nine hundred and seventy-nine days that follow President Kennedy's speech, eighteen astronauts climb into spaceships; three of them die before even leaving the ground. Eight rockets go into space. And four hundred thousand people - engineers, technicians, mathematicians, scientists, machinists, and more - join Project Apollo in hopes of making the dream a reality. -- From dust jacket. |
