Biographical note | John Luke Porter (1813-1893) of Virginia was a naval constructor for the United States Navy and later Chief Naval Constructor for the Confederate States of America Navy during the Civil War. Porter played a major role in the refloating and converting the USS Merrimac into the CSS Virginia, the first ever ironclad gunboat and ram. |
