Abstract Papers (1854-1865) include letters mainly from Robert C. Caldwell to Mag, his wife, written in New Bern, N.C.; Wilmington, N.C.; Savannah, Ga.; Branchville, S.C.; and Kinston, N.C. Topics include conditions of soldiers; family matters, including the family farm in Cabarrus County, N.C.; camp life; and experiences of battle. Also includes original envelopes, Caldwell's war record written in his own hand, his signed oath of allegiance to the Union (16 September 1865), 1863 Confederate tax receipt, and a bill of sale for a slave.
