Scope and content Earliest correspondence contains letters to newspaper editors from Commodore W. Creighton. Much of the 1850s and undated correspondence is of a personal nature between Creighton, his wife, and his friends while serving on the USS CUMBERLAND Other correspondence is largely of an official nature and is between Creighton (while serving on the USS NORTH CAROLINA, USS WARRENTON, USS GUERRIER and USS WORCESTER) and Samuel Currey, William G. Marcy, Samuel P. Carter (of the USS MONOCACY), and S. P. Bucklin. Communication between Creighton and governmental departments include the United States Navy Department and the United States Navy Department's Bureau of Navigation. Topics include recruitment and the court-martials of George Hudson and W. J. Hogan. Of particular interest are letters documenting a period of surveillance of the island of Japan in 1868. The letters, all of which are addressed to Creighton, are from Samuel P. Carter, commander of the USS MONOCACY, and Earl English, commander of the USS IROQOUIS. Publications include pamphlets by the Mutual Life Insurance Company of New York and a booklet printed by the United States Navy. Other items include reports that document interrogation by Creighton of Thomas Holdup Stevens and navigation and coal expenditures of the USS ONEIDA, receipts, and minutes that document various property concerns in Bronx, N.Y.

Biographical noteJohnston Blakeley Creighton (1822-1883), who married Elizabeth W. Stringham, entered the Navy as a midshipman in 1838 and later became a lieutenant in 1853. After being commissioned as commander in 1862, Creighton commanded the steamer OTTAWA, part of the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron. In 1863, he was assigned to special duty and served as 4th commander of the steamer MAHASKA until being transferred to the MINGO, where he served as commander until the end of the Civil War. He became commandant of the Norfolk Navy Yard in 1879. During his naval career, Creighton served on the USS CUMBERLAND, USS NORTH CAROLINA, USS ONEIDA, USS WORCESTER and USS GUERRIER.
