The collection focuses mainly on Milton L. Von Mann's activities during the Korean War (1950-1952). Correspondence in the collection includes a memo to Task Force 90 forwarding commendatory dispatches from General MacArthur, Admiral Sherman, Admiral Radford, and Vice Admiral Joy (September 26, 1950); two memos concerning Von Mann's recommendation for personal award by his commanding officer (October 20, 1950); and letters signed by Secretary of the Navy E. S. Thomas awarding Von Mann a Combat Action Ribbon with three battle stars for meritorious service during the Korean War (October, 1950), and the Navy Marine Corps medal for heroism at Camp LeJeune, North Carolina (June 26, 1956). A copy of Von Mann's award of the Bronze Star for meritorious service in the Korean War is included as well (1950). Also included in the collection is an issue of the newsletter of the Tennessee Korean War Memorial Association (December, 1991) which contains an article by Von Mann, "Aboard the USS LST-898," concerning the Inchon Invasion, and a copy of another article by Von Mann, "Death Rides the High Tide" (July 4, 1991), describing the successful assassination mission against a North Korean general carried out by Von Mann and two others in March of 1951. |

| Biographical note | Milton L. Von Mann was born in 1930, joined the U.S. Navy in 1948, and subsequently served two tours of duty in the Korean War as a member of the Navy Underwater Demolition Team (UDT), with a ten-month hiatus as quartermaster-signalman aboard the USS LST-898. While aboard the USS LST-898, Von Mann was wounded and decorated for valor during the invasion of Inchon, Korea. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, Von Mann attended Virginia Technical College, was a sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps at Camp LeJeune, and subsequently became a high school teacher and assistant football coach for Antioch High School in Tennessee and a scout for the Pittsburgh Steelers. |
