Abstract Papers reflect varied aspects of the United States Navy during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Correspondence and other materials discuss the role of the Navy, cities Dyer visited while in service, and his time aboard the following: USS Plymouth, USS Frolic, USS Constitution, USS Despatch, USS Vesuvius, USS Stranger, USS Yankton, USS Rainbow, and the Pacific Station. Materials also detail his term as governor of Guam, as well as the customs of the native Chamorros. In addition, the papers chronicle the personal affairs and relationships of members of the Dyer and Palmer families. The bulk of the collection consists of correspondence of George Dyer to his wife during his absences from home, although letters of Susan Dyer, George Washington Dyer, Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Hazzard Palmer, and other members of the family comprise a significant portion of the papers.
