Scope and content Correspondence includes letters written to Lillian Askew of Herford, N.C., from family members and acquaintances in which they discuss family matters; letters to Samuel Haines that describe poor social conditions in Trenton, N.J.; and letters written to C. Y. (Chris) Smith from Berend Behrends, who was serving in the military in the Philippines and Manila. Photographs feature portraits of individuals, 1927 Elm City High School graduating class, a Coxville School group, 1908 flood in Fayetteville, and a Pitt County, N.C., school bus and drivers. Also includes deeds for land in Hertford County, N.C., and Ashe County, N.C.; Greensboro College commencement address (1872); historical and genealogical information about Peter Evans Smith that suggests he was the possible builder of the Confederate ironclad Albemarle; recipe book; handwritten music book; accounting journal from the Oakridge Institute of Business College; 1917 edition of The Union Herald; and an undated edition of Brunswick Evening Banner. Postcards represent various places in North Carolina.

Biographical noteRoger E. Kammerer, Jr., (b. 1956) is a freelance artist and local historian of Greenville, N.C. Originally from Nebraska, he spent most of his early life in Swansboro, N.C. He is a charter member of the Pitt County Family Researchers, Inc., and has served as president and editor of its quarterly journal; has served on the board of the Village of Yesteryear; is a lifetime member of the Pitt County Historical Society; and has authored or co-authored numerous books and booklets on local history and genealogy.
