Abstract The collection deals primarily with economic affairs of the Ange family of Martin County, N.C., during the period 1829-1895. Included are numerous promissory notes, court debt suits, and receipts for payment of debt. There are also lists of debts accumulated by the family for calico, rum, whiskey, tobacco, cows, pigs, etc. Numerous receipts for state and local taxes are included. Correspondence is primarily family centered but there are references to economic affairs including the construction of hog pens, logrolling, planting crops, and picking cotton. Miscellaneous material includes the loyalty oath of Francis Ange, 1880 medicine advertisements, and a poem "The Vain Squirrel."
