Getsinger family papers, 1828-1972.

Abstract Correspondence of John C. Getsinger, Sr., a sergeant in Company E of the 1st Regiment of North Carolina Volunteers during the Mexican War, describes camp life, his sea voyage to Texas, and the conditions of Camp Buena Vista. Letters to Getsinger mention farming operations near Williamston. Additional Mexican War materials include a list of soldiers from Martin and Edgecombe Counties in companies A and E of the 1st Regiment of North Carolina Volunteers; photocopies of his sketchbook; an equipment list; and accounts concerning his company's men. Civil War records reflect the service of John C. Getsinger and his son. Among the papers of the elder Getsinger, who served as a captain in Company B, 10th Regiment, 3rd Brigade of North Carolina Militia, are notes concerning the company's drills and a list of men in the company. The papers of John Getsinger, Jr., a sergeant in Company B of the 40th Regiment of North Carolina Troops, include a chronology of his movements and notes concerning clothing, supplies, and pay received. Other papers concern the activities of Perlie E. Getsinger, an elder in the Kehukee Association of the Primitive Baptist Church who served as pastor of Smithwicks Creek Church in Jamesville, N.C. Thomas R. Getsinger materials reflect his attendance at Buies Creek Academy and Wake Forest College. Collection also contains financial and farm-related papers, including bills, receipts, volumes, and other loose papers; Martin County deeds; documents concerning a loan from the Atlantic Joint Stock Land Bank; photographs; poetry; and Getsinger family genealogical information.
