Abstract Collection contains correspondence, certificates, legal papers, and other items. Of particular interest is a letter (1866) from a friend in the Federal occupation forces in Jacksonville, Fla., describing military and naval activities, leisure activities, Confederate desertion, and concern over Confederate influence with a Federal commanding officer. Other letters of interest describe travel in the midwestern U.S., temperance meetings on army posts, war news, and the establishing of various businesses in Ohio and Indiana. Legal papers concern the estate of Phebe B. Benedict's father, Hiram Barrett, Poundridge, N.Y. Other items include a plat from a Georgia land grant for former Cherokee lands, teaching certificates, certificate of membership for the Sons of Temperance, a description of a voyage in Chesapeake Bay and the Potomac River, rail tickets, personal cards, a report of guard duty for prisoners of war, and a blank form for military rations requisition.

Biographical noteAndrew Bell Benedict (1839-1911) was a native of New York who served in the Civil War and later lived in Indiana, Ohio, and Tennessee. Benedict married Phebe Barrett (1846-1913).
