Abstract This book presents the first broad overview of the Venetian music press during the mid-sixteenth century. The author examines the commerce of music and its connection to the printing and publishing industry through an exploration of various mercantile activities of the trade. Focusing on the two dynastic publishing houses of Scotto and Gardano, she offers a rare glimpse at the business strategies that music printers followed in the marketing of musical repertories. This book bridges the gap between music and other disciplines, by clarifying the complex relationships that existed among composers, patrons, and printers. It also provides valuable insight into wider issues concerning the intellectual, artistic, and commercial worlds of mid-Cinquecento Venice. This highly original study will appeal to anyone whose interests include Renaissance music, printing and publishing, Italian culture, and rare books.
