In Nazi-occupied Europe, gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt blends jazz with his own musical traditions. In New York Billie Holiday is unofficial queen despite a growing addiction to narcotics. Duke Ellington, assisted by the gifted young arranger, Billy Strayhorn, brings his music to ever-greater heights. After dark a small underground of gifted young musicians led by the trumpet virtuoso Dizzy Gillespie and saxophonists Charlie Parker and Ben Webster begin to develop a new fast and intricate way of playing, developing a new music called bebop. Meanwhile in 1945, black soldiers return home to the same racism they fought against, and a growing unrest sets the seeds for future rebellions. 538 DVD, stereo. 600 10 Parker, Charlie, |d1920-1955. |=^A93449 600 10 Gillespie, Dizzy, |d1917-1993. |=^A577333 600 10 Shaw, Artie, |d1910-2004. |=^A58472 600 10 Miller, Glenn, |d1904-1944. |=^A261545 600 10 Brubeck, Dave. |=^A172611 600 10 Webster, Ben, |d1909-1973. |=^A95004 600 10 Strayhorn, Billy. |=^A255627 600 10 Reinhardt, Django, |d1910-1953. |=^A140357 600 10 Holiday, Billie, |d1915-1959. |=^A84530 600 10 Ellington, Duke, |d1899-1974. |=^A66183 650 0 World War, 1939-1945 |xAfrican Americans. |=^A79208 650 0 World War, 1939-1945 |vSongs and music. |=^A489300 650 0 Jazz |y1941-1950 |xHistory and criticism. |=^A298406 650 0 Jazz musicians |zUnited States |vBiography. |=^A413048 650 0 African American musicians |vBiography. |=^A449161 650 0 African Americans |vMusic. |=^A489288 650 0 Racism against Black people |zUnited States |xHistory |y20th century. |=^A1432314 650 0 Swing (Music) |xHistory and criticism. |=^A1019474 650 0 Bop (Music) |xHistory and criticism. |=^A471687 700 1 Parker, Charlie, |d1920-1955 |einstrumentalist. |=^A93449 700 1 Gillespie, Dizzy, |d1917-1993 |einstrumentalist. |=^A577333 700 1 Shaw, Artie, |d1910-2004 |einstrumentalist. |=^A58472 700 1 Miller, Glenn, |d1904-1944 |einstrumentalist. |=^A261545 700 1 Brubeck, Dave |einstrumentalist. |=^A172611 700 1 Webster, Ben, |d1909-1973 |einstrumentalist. |=^A95004 700 1 Strayhorn, Billy |einstrumentalist. |=^A255627 700 1 Reinhardt, Django, |d1910-1953 |einstrumentalist. |=^A140357 700 1 Holiday, Billie, |d1915-1959 |esinger. |=^A84530 700 1 Burns, Ken, |d1953- |edirector, |eproduction personnel. |=^A667067 700 1 David, Keith |enarrator. |=^A345434 700 1 Ward, Geoffrey C. |eauthor. |=^A191008 700 1 Novick, Lynn |eproduction personnel. |=^A356949 700 1 Ewers, Erik |eeditor. |=^A489301 700 1 Marsalis, Wynton, |d1961- |ecommentator. |=^A304032 700 1 Sherrill, Joya, |d1927-2010 |ecommentator. |=^A489302 700 1 Murray, Albert |ecommentator. |=^A53952 700 1 Crouch, Stanley |ecommentator. |=^A257843 700 1 Giddins, Gary |ecommentator. |=^A189710 700 1 Ellington, Mercedes |ecommentator. |=^A489292 700 1 Hinton, Milt |ecommentator. |=^A225619 700 1 Sanders, John, |d1925- |ecommentator. |=^A383084 700 1 Levy, Stan |ecommentator. |=^A421727 700 1 Shaw, Arvell |ecommentator. |=^A489290 700 1 Rowles, Jimmie |ecommentator. |=^A286714 700 12 Elington, Duke, |d1899-1974. |tC-jam blues. |?UNAUTHORIZED 710 2 Florentine Films. |=^A317269 710 2 British Broadcasting Corporation. |=^A17314 710 2 WETA-TV (Television station : Washington, D.C.) |=^A265700 710 2 PBS DVD (Firm) |=^A489293 994 X0 |bERE 901 Dashiell, Carroll : MUSC 2258 |bMUSC 2258 : Dashiell, Carroll 901 Caison, John : MUSC 2258 |bMUSC 2258 : Caison, John 596 3 998 849030
