Summary Correspondence, poems, essays, a hand-drawn map of Beaufort County, NC, a pamphlet, and several miscellaneous items. Correspondence includes personal letters that tell of weddings, complain of loneliness, and mention camp meetings. Two letters (1859) discuss the sale of slave boys. Other correspondence mentions Lenoir Institute and tells of studies there. Civil War correspondence contains first-hand accounts of some battles. One letter describes the Battle of Seven Pines and the approximate number of troops in the battle (1862), while another mentions McClellan's advance towards Richmond with a large force (1862). Correspondence from Fort Fisher describes the Union blockade of the Fort (1863). Other letters inquire of war news from New Bern; tell of Union raids from Tarboro to Washington, NC; mention the fall of Vicksburg and Jackson; tell of a battle over a Confederate supply ship. Later letters are concerned with personal events. Also included are original and copied poems; a hand-drawn map of Beaufort County, NC; a fictional pamphlet, Farmer Holt's Daughter by Charles Garvice; and several other items.
