Other comments relate to complaints about Lincoln and the Emancipation Proclamation, complaints about various Union officers, destruction of crops in Virginia, conduct of African American troops, and battles in Virginia and North Carolina. Pre-war correspondence concerns wages and prices in Wisconsin and Iowa, and life at Fort Dodge, Iowa, where Kiester lived from 1854 to 1858.

a| Jacob S. Kiester, a Pennsylvania native, was a laborer in Wisconsin and Iowa until the outbreak of the Civil War. As a sergeant in the 103rd Pennsylvania regiment, he participated in the Peninsular Campaign in Virginia and in skirmishes near Kinston, Goldsboro, and Plymouth, N.C. He was captured in Plymouth and died in a Confederate military prison in Florence, Ala.
