It also analyzes the roles of the historical figures, both clergy and crown, who were associated with these incidents. The debate upon the use of altars or Communion tables was important because it determined the meaning of the Eucharist and how one worshiped. If an altar was used then, in the mind of Reformed Englishmen it denoted a sacrificial Mass. By contrast, a Communion table indicated a memorial ceremony of Christ's Passion. The altar controversy of Archbishop William Laud (1573-1645) is well noted by historians. In order for there to have been contention over Laud's act of restoring altars to the Church of England, there must have been precedents where the altars were removed from Churches. This thesis identifies and analyzes these precedents and examining earlier patterns of altar removal during the English Reformation. Specifically it focuses on these situations where altars were replaced with Communion tables prior to Laud's controversial actions. 504 Includes bibliographical references (leaves 146-153). 650 0 Altars. |=^A261723 610 20 Church of England |xHistory. |=^A18267 610 27 Church of England. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00532932 |?UNAUTHORIZED 650 7 Altars. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00806095 655 7 doctoral dissertations. |2aat |0(CStmoGRI)aatgf300312076 655 7 masters theses. |2aat |0(CStmoGRI)aatgf300077723 655 7 dissertations. |2aat |0(CStmoGRI)aatgf300028029 655 7 theses. |2aat |0(CStmoGRI)aatgf300028028 655 7 Academic theses. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01726453 655 7 History. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01411628 655 7 Academic theses. |2lcgft 655 7 Thèses et écrits académiques. |2rvmgf |0(CaQQLa)RVMGF-000001173 700 1 Nischan, Bodo, |edegree supervisor. |=^A296722 710 2 East Carolina University. |bDepartment of History. |=^A636991 856 41 |zAccess via ScholarShip |uhttp://hdl.handle.net/10342/10156 949 Click on web address |wasis |hjoyner101 949 Click on web address |wasis |hhsl111 994 C0 |bERE 596 1 4 998 646652 998 646652
