Many have implemented diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives or made other attempts to confront past and present biases in pursuit of greater equity. Are such efforts merely performative, or are any transforming norms and power structures? What would it take to hold newsrooms truly accountable? Andrea Wenzel provides a critical look at how local media organizations in the Philadelphia area are attempting to address structural racism. She focuses on two established, majority-white newsrooms, the Philadelphia Inquirer and the public radio station WHYY, and two start-ups where at least half the staff identify as Black, Indigenous, or people of color (BIPOC), Resolve Philly and Kensington Voice. Drawing on more than five years of field research, Wenzel charts how these outlets have pursued a range of interventions-such as tracking the diversity of sources, examining reporting and editing practices, and working with community members to gain input-to varying degrees of success. Wenzel argues that institutional and systemic transformation will be possible only through the establishment of structures that facilitate holding those with more power responsible for listening to and addressing the needs and concerns of those with less. Offering recommendations for building infrastructure that enables sustainable accountability, Antiracist Journalism is an important book for all stakeholders interested in making local journalism more equitable"-- |cProvided by publisher. 650 0 Journalism |xObjectivity. |=^A88538 650 0 Press |zPennsylvania |zPhiladelphia. |=^A22308 650 0 Racism in the press |zPennsylvania |zPhiladelphia. |=^A850496 650 0 Anti-racism |zPennsylvania |zPhiladelphia. |=^A713604 650 0 American newspapers |zPennsylvania |zPhiladelphia. |=^A15564 650 0 Local mass media |zPennsylvania |vPhiladelphia. |=^A330262 650 7 American newspapers |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00807293 650 7 Anti-racism |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01742067 650 7 Journalism |xObjectivity |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00984072 650 7 Local mass media |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01001428 650 7 Press |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01075837 650 7 Racism in the press |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01086668 651 7 Pennsylvania |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01204598 |?UNAUTHORIZED 651 7 Pennsylvania |zPhiladelphia |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01204170 |?UNAUTHORIZED 776 08 |iOnline version:Wenzel, Andrea. |tAntiracist journalism |dNew York : Columbia University Press, 2023 |z9780231558068 |w(DLC) 2023024344 938 YBP Library Services |bYANK |n19987648 938 YBP Library Services |bYANK |n19987649 949 PN4784.O24 W46 2023 |hJOYNER132 |oPurchased with Ronnie Barnes Endowment; jmc 994 C0 |bERE 596 1 998 6342750
