But, just a few years later, on May 31, 1921, the teenaged Ed hid in a bathtub as a white mob descended on his neighborhood. They laid waste to 35 blocks and murdering as many as 300 people. The Tulsa Race Massacre was one of the worst acts of racist violence in United States history. The Goodwins and many of their neighbors soon rebuilt the district into "a Mecca," in Ed's words, where nightlife thrived, small businesses flourished, and an underworld economy lived comfortably alongside public storefronts. Ed grew into a prominent businessman and bought a community newspaper called the Oklahoma Eagle to chronicle its resurgence and battles against white bigotry. He and his genteel wife, Jeanne, raised an ambitious family, who became literal poster-children for black progress, and their son Jim, an attorney, embodied their hopes for the Civil Rights Movement. But, by the 1970s urban renewal policies had nearly emptied the neighborhood, even as Jim and his neighbors tried to hold onto pieces of Greenwood. Today, the newspaper remains, and Ed's granddaughter Regina represents the neighborhood in the Oklahoma state legislature, working alongside a new generation of local activists"-- |cProvided by publisher. 600 30 Goodwin family. |=^A235580 600 37 Goodwin family. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00213254 |?UNAUTHORIZED 651 0 Greenwood (Tulsa, Okla.) |xRace relations |xHistory. |=^A1420524 651 0 Tulsa (Okla.) |xRace relations |xHistory. |=^A635016 650 0 Tulsa Race Massacre, Tulsa, Okla., 1921. |=^A1422774 650 0 Urban renewal |zOklahoma |zTulsa |xHistory. |=^A12438 650 0 African Americans |zOklahoma |zTulsa |xSocial conditions. |=^A2035 650 0 African Americans |zOklahoma |zTulsa |vBiography. |=^A2035 651 0 Greenwood (Tulsa, Okla.) |vBiography. |=^A1420524 651 0 Tulsa (Okla.) |vBiography. |=^A635016 650 7 HISTORY / Americas (North, Central, South, West Indies) |2bisacsh 650 7 African Americans. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00799558 650 7 African Americans |xSocial conditions. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00799698 650 7 Race relations. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01086509 650 7 Urban renewal. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01162536 651 7 Oklahoma |zTulsa. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01205469 |?UNAUTHORIZED 650 7 Urban renewal. |2sears 650 7 African Americans. |2sears 650 7 African Americans |vBiography. |2sears 651 7 Tulsa (Okla.) |2sears |?UNAUTHORIZED 651 7 Tulsa (Okla.) |vBiography. |2sears |?UNAUTHORIZED 647 7 Tulsa Race Massacre |c(Tulsa, Oklahoma : |d1921) |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst02009167 648 7 1921 |2fast 655 7 Biographies. |2lcgft 655 7 Biographies. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01919896 655 7 History. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01411628 776 08 |iOnline version:Luckerson, Victor |tBuilt from the fire. |bFirst edition |dNew York : Random House, [2023] |z9780593134382 |w(DLC) 2022055078 949 |i30372017327344 |ojjlm 960 |o1 |s30.00 |tJoyner48 |uJAPP |zUSD 596 1 998 6220193
