Diaries kept by John Lowell Gardner, 15 May-7 October 1823 (with gaps), on a trip to Europe after graduating from Harvard in 1821 and before starting his career as a Boston merchant. Diary entries include detailed descriptions of the ocean voyage to England on the ship AMETHYST; sights seen and museums and churches visited in England, Ireland, Scotland, the Netherlands, France, Switzerland, and Italy; experiences during coach and steamboat travels; social engagements; time spent with friends; social and cultural observations; and the weather. |
