Cold War Game chronicles that response and shows that it was not a replication of the state-directed Soviet sports system, but was instigated through covert psychological warfare operations and overt propaganda distributed to the "free world." In the lead up to and during each Olympic festival throughout this period, the U.S. sent waves of propaganda material across the globe to advocate the American way of life and to denounce communism. It used the Olympic host cities as venues to advertise the American economic and political system; it also attempted to manipulate the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in clandestine ways. Cold War Games describes the emergence of government fears about communist sport in the late 1940s and, crucially, how these fears were channeled into the Olympic Games starting in 1950. It concludes its analysis in 1960 at the end point, in many ways, of covert government initiatives at Olympic festivals. Cold War Games situates sport in the larger discussion of how America was committed to a "total" Cold War by demonstrating that the Olympics Games was embroiled in the U.S. government's own cultural offensive"-- |cProvided by publisher. 538 Mode of access: World Wide Web 650 0 Olympics |xPolitical aspects |zUnited States |xHistory |y20th century. |=^A1098089 650 0 Sports |xPolitical aspects |zUnited States |xHistory |y20th century. |=^A4237 650 0 Sports and state |zUnited States |xHistory |y20th century. |=^A1019289 650 0 Sports |xSocial aspects |zUnited States |xHistory |y20th century. |=^A50380 650 0 Cold War |xSocial aspects |zUnited States. |=^A990903 650 0 Propaganda, Anti-communist |zUnited States |xHistory |y20th century. |=^A58268 650 0 National characteristics, American |xHistory |y20th century. |=^A1005903 650 7 HISTORY / United States / 20th Century. |2bisacsh 650 7 SPORTS & RECREATION / Olympics. |2bisacsh 651 0 United States |xForeign relations |zSoviet Union. |=^A42375 651 0 Soviet Union |xForeign relations |zUnited States. |=^A42376 651 0 United States |xPolitics and government |y1945-1989. |=^A271979 651 0 United States |xSocial conditions |y1945- |=^A10195 655 0 Electronic books. |=^A491897 856 40 |zFull text available from Ebook Central - Academic Complete |uhttps://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/eastcarolina/detail.action?docID=4443554 949 CLICK ON WEB ADDRESS |wASIS |hJOYNER188 949 CLICK ON WEB ADDRESS |wASIS |hHSL77 949 CLICK ON WEB ADDRESS |wASIS |hJMUSIC60 596 1 3 4 998 5947465
