Abstract | Although his music derived initially from the romantic world of Richard Strauss, Liszt, Brahms and Wagner, Bartók was ultimately a classicist. The struggles he went through to form his own style, and the experiments he made with the various influences upon him, can be seen most clearly through his orchestral works. It is these works (excluding the concertos) which are the subject of the author's BBC Music Guide. The author was a composer and pianist. His compositions covered most of the established forms and his recorded works included his first two symphonies, his song-cycle for piano and orchestra, his String Trio, and 'Rounds for Brass Quintet'. |
