Backed by investors such as Larry Ellison and Tim Draper, Theranos sold shares in a fundraising round that valued the company at $9 billion, putting Holmes's worth at an estimated $4.7 billion. There was just one problem: the technology didn't work. For years, Holmes had been misleading investors, FDA officials, and her own employees. When the author, working at The Wall Street Journal, got a tip from a former Theranos employee and started asking questions, both the author and the newspaper were threatened with lawsuits. Undaunted, the paper ran the first of dozens of Theranos articles in late 2015. By early 2017, the company's value was zero and Holmes faced potential legal action from the government and her investors. The biggest corporate fraud since Enron is a cautionary tale set amid the bold promises and gold-rush frenzy of Silicon Valley. -- |cPublisher information. 600 10 Holmes, Elizabeth, |d1984- |=^A1427562 610 20 Theranos (Firm) |xHistory. |=^A1425200 650 0 Hematologic equipment industry |zUnited States. |=^A882969 650 0 New business enterprises |xCorrupt practices |zUnited States |vCases. |=^A31694 650 0 Securities fraud |zUnited States |vCases. |=^A94155 650 12 Fraud |0(DNLM)D005607 |=^A948453 650 7 BUSINESS & ECONOMICS |xEntrepreneurship. |2bisacsh 650 7 BUSINESS & ECONOMICS |xFinance. |2bisacsh 650 7 TECHNOLOGY & ENGINEERING |xBiomedical. |2bisacsh 650 7 Securities fraud. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01110802 650 7 Fraud. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00933786 650 7 Hematologic equipment industry. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00954898 650 7 Hematologic equipment industry |zUnited States. |2sears 650 7 Fraud |zUnited States. |2sears 651 2 United States. |0(DNLM)D014481 |=^A2987 610 27 Theranos (Firm) |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst02009828 |?UNAUTHORIZED 651 7 United States. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01204155 |?UNAUTHORIZED 610 27 Theranos (Firm) |xHistory. |2sears |?UNAUTHORIZED 655 0 History. |=^A26419 655 4 History. 655 7 Trials, litigation, etc. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01423712 655 7 History. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01411628 655 7 History. |2lcgft 776 08 |iOnline version:Carreyrou, John. |tBad blood. |bFirst edition |w(OCoLC)1231683471 938 Brodart |bBROD |n121475832 938 YBP Library Services |bYANK |n15083235 949 HD9995.H423 U627 2018 |hJOYNER127 |ojssb |i30372017428886 994 C0 |bERE 596 1 998 5719152
