Abstract |
Political and civic leader Al Edwards was born in Houston, Texas on March 19, 1937. Edwards graduated from Phyllis Wheatley High School and then received his B.A. degree from Texas Southern University in 1966. At the age of 41, Edwards was elected to the Texas State Legislature from Houston's House District 146. In 1979, Edwards supported legislation that recognized Juneteenth Day, a holiday that commemorated the announcement of the abolition of slavery. While serving in the legislature, he founded his own real estate company. He also served as the Texas State Director for Reverend Jesse Jackson's two presidential campaign runs in 1984 and 1988. In 1986, Edwards also founded "Operation Justus," a community based organization that has been a referral service for persons with social problems and concerns. Edwards left the Texas legislature, in 2007, after twenty-eight years of serving the people of District 146 |
