Abstract |
Professor and painter William T. Williams was born on July 17, 1942 in Cross Creek, North Carolina. In 1956, Williams attended the High School for Industrial Arts in Manhattan, and graduated from New York City Community College in 1962 with his A.A.S. degree. He obtained his B.F.A. degree from Pratt Institute of Art in 1966 and earned his M.F.A. degree from Yale University School of Art and Architecture in 1968. Williams' first exhibition was held at the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York in 1969. Throughout the 1970s, Williams' work was exhibited throughout New York City. In 1971, Williams became a professor of art at Brooklyn College, and in the late 1970s, Williams traveled to Africa, which had a major impact on the style of his work. Williams was awarded a Guggenheim fellowship in 1987. In 2006, Williams was awarded the prestigious North Carolina Award, the highest civilian honor the state can bequeath. |
