Abstract |
Educator Harrell S. Spruill was born on August 18, 1924 in Travis, North Carolina. Spruill graduated from Tyrell County Training School in 1940. After deferring a year, he entered the Hampton Institute as a work-study student. In 1943, Spruill was drafted into the U.S. Navy. Following his military service, he returned to Hampton and received his B.S. degree in 1952. Two years later, he took a position in Annapolis, Maryland, where he taught industrial arts for twenty-nine years. In 1956, Spruill bought fifteen acres of land and with the profits of the 1987 sale, the Spruill siblings established a scholarship in their parents' names. The following year, he bought land on Tracy's Landing to run farm programs for inner city children. In 2003, Spruill started the Har-Pearl Foundation, co-named after his late wife, which donated to various organizations. Spruill passed away on December 6, 2012, at age 88. |
