Abstract |
Blues musician Fruteland Jackson was born on June 9, 1953 in Doddsville, Sunflower County, Mississippi. Jackson's formal music training began in high school where he played bugle and trombone. He attended Columbia College in Chicago and majored in performing arts. He studied vocal performance at Chicago's Roosevelt University. Temporarily suspending his artistic ambitions, Jackson worked as a private investigator for the State of Illinois' Department of Human Rights. In 1980, he returned to Mississippi and opened a wholesale seafood business that flourished until Hurricane Elena devastated the local economy in 1985. After the hurricane, Jackson returned to his passion for blues music. In 1996, he founded the "Blues in the Schools" program. Jackson received numerous awards including the 1996 Illinois Arts Council Folk/Ethnic Heritage Award. In 2003, his album "Blues 2.0" was nominated for a W.C. Handy Award in the category of Acoustic Blues Album of the Year. |
