Born out of wedlock in 1813, he went to work at age thirteen to help support his family in Charleston, South Carolina. He was a nobody. Yet, by the 1840s, he rose to become one of the most acclaimed people of the age -- known as a wilderness explorer, bestselling writer, gallant army officer, and latter-day conquistador, who in 1846 began the United States' takeover of California from Mexico. He was a celebrity who personified the country's westward expansion. Mountains, towns, ships, and streets were named after him. How did he climb so far? A vital factor was his wife, Jessie Benton Frémont, the daughter of a powerful United States senator. Jessie wanted to play roles in politics and exploration, which were then reserved for men. Frustrated, she threw her skill and passion into promoting her husband. Ordered by the US Army to map the Oregon Trail, John traveled thousands of miles on horseback, indifferent to his safety and that of the other members of his expeditions. When he returned home, Jessie helped him to shape dramatic reports of his adventures, which were reprinted in newspapers and bound as popular books. Jessie became his political adviser, and a power player in her own right. In 1856, the famous couple strategized as John became the first-ever presidential nominee of the newly established Republican Party. The party had been founded in opposition to slavery, and though both Frémonts were Southerners they became symbols of the cause. With rare detail and in consummate style, Steve Inskeep tells the story of a couple whose joint ambitions and talents intertwined with those of the nascent United States itself. Americans linked the Frémonts with not one but three great social movements of the time -- westward settlement, women's rights, and opposition to slavery. Theirs is a surprisingly modern story of ambition and fame; they lived in a time of globalization, technological disruption, and divisive politics that foreshadowed our own. The Frémonts' adventures amount to nothing less than a tour of the early American soul"-- |cProvided by publisher. 600 10 Frémont, Jessie Benton, |d1824-1902. |=^A193078 600 10 Frémont, John Charles, |d1813-1890. |=^A44100 600 17 Frémont, Jessie Benton, |d1824-1902. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00111937 |?UNAUTHORIZED 600 17 Frémont, John Charles, |d1813-1890. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00008405 |?UNAUTHORIZED 650 0 Explorers |zWest (U.S.) |vBiography. |=^A991628 650 0 Women pioneers |zWest (U.S.) |vBiography. |=^A1024051 650 0 Pioneers |zWest (U.S.) |vBiography. |=^A421787 650 0 Politicians |zUnited States |vBiography. |=^A418418 650 0 Politicians' spouses |zUnited States |vBiography. |=^A1241162 650 0 Women's rights |zUnited States |xHistory |y19th century. |=^A1024073 650 0 Antislavery movements |zUnited States |xHistory |y19th century. |=^A353717 650 7 BIOGRAPHY & AUTOBIOGRAPHY / Adventurers & Explorers. |2bisacsh 650 7 HISTORY / United States / State & Local / West (AK, CA, CO, HI, ID, MT, NV, UT, WY) |2bisacsh 650 7 HISTORY / United States / 19th Century. |2bisacsh 650 7 Antislavery movements. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00810800 650 7 Explorers. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00918556 650 7 Pioneers. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01064447 650 7 Politicians. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01069915 650 7 Politicians' spouses. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01069950 650 7 Women pioneers. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01178307 650 7 Women's rights. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01178818 651 7 United States. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01204155 |?UNAUTHORIZED 651 7 West United States. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01243255 |?UNAUTHORIZED 650 7 Explorers |vBiography. |2sears 650 7 Women pioneers |vBiography. |2sears 650 7 Pioneers |vBiography. |2sears 650 7 Politicians |zUnited States |vBiography. |2sears 650 7 Politicians' spouses |vBiography. |2sears 650 7 Women's rights |zUnited States. |2sears 650 7 Slavery |zUnited States. |2sears 648 7 1800-1899 |2fast 655 0 Biography. |=^A2154 655 7 Biographies. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01919896 655 7 History. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01411628 655 7 Biographies. |2lcgft 776 08 |iOnline version:Inskeep, Steve. |tImperfect union. |dNew York : Penguin Press, [2020] |z9780735224360 |w(DLC) 2019030463 949 |i30372017364917 |ojjlm 960 |o1 |s32.00 |tJoyner48 |uJAPP |zUSD 596 1 998 5325495
