Abstract Shoeburyness High School in Southend on Sea has developed a fresh approach to supporting children with special needs in a mainstream school. In Year 7 those children who find the transfer to secondary particularly difficult are taught in a small single class called the achievement group. They are supported with a curriculum differentiated to meet their needs which is delivered by primary-trained teachers. Wherever possible the long term aim is to get children back into the mainstream. This film follows two children who, after receiving dedicated support for a term and a half in the achievement group, are now ready to make the move. Explore how the foundations laid down in the achievement group help them in their move and investigate what strategies are in place to ensure a smooth transition and ongoing support.
