Abstract A visit to a childminder in Birmingham who looks after two three year olds. Accredited childminder Julie noticed Tom and Riley's excitement about buses and built a bus journey into her plans. This programme follows them on their journey, as they talk excitedly about passengers, see other buses, and both notice and take photographs of key features of the journey. At the bus station, they notice the timetable which leads to number work. Back at the childminder's they consolidate their learning. They use the photographs to recall and order the journey. They role play about the bus, using a large cardboard box and also draw and make models around the bus theme. The programme looks at the way Julie plans from a child-initiated starting point, skilfully leads the learning and follows up an experience in the everyday environment with play at her setting.
Abstract Sheila Sage, Primary Adviser with responsibility for Early Years in Worcestershire, is joined by Ged Cotton, an infant school headteacher from Hove and previously team leader for Early Years at QCA, Diane Rich, Early Years consultant and author, and special guest Julie Thomas, the childminder featured in Childminder 1 . The panel discuss child-centred starting points for planning and how the National Childminding Association can support planning. The panel discuss Julie's bus journey, her questioning, the use of a digital camera and how numbers in the real world on the buses and timetables motivate mathematical development. The panel talk about follow up through sequencing photographs, role play and associated activities. They analyse the resources in the garden and Julie's role, specifically how much intervention there should be in role play.
