While the roots of the modern 'conquistadorial' attitude toward nature lie in late medieval alchemy, which fused Aristotelian reason with Christian apocalypticism in the militant context of crusade and spiritual conquest, this book argues that the modern idea of what it means to discover something has a colonial history in which conquest legitimated the modern (Baconian) idea of discovery by underwriting it with religious messianism and early modern state power. Thus, the book traces the intellectual and spiritual legacies of such late medieval alchemists as Roger Bacon, Arnald of Villanova, and Ramon Llull in the early modern literature of the conquest of America in texts written by authors such as Christopher Columbus, Amerigo Vespucci, José de Acosta, Nicolás Monardes, Walter Raleigh, Thomas Harriot, Francis Bacon, and Alexander von Humboldt"-- |cProvided by publisher. 651 0 America |vEarly accounts to 1600 |xHistory and criticism. |=^A520979 650 0 Alchemy |vEarly works to 1800 |xHistory and criticism. |=^A680869 651 0 America |xDiscovery and exploration. |=^A23074 650 7 Alchemy. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00804245 650 7 Discoveries in geography. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst00894950 651 7 America. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01239786 |?UNAUTHORIZED 655 7 Criticism, interpretation, etc. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01411635 655 7 Early works. |2fast |0(OCoLC)fst01411636 776 08 |iOnline version:Bauer, Ralph, 1965- author. |tAlchemy of conquest |dCharlottesville : University of Virginia Press, 2019 |z9780813942551 |w(DLC) 2018059506 830 0 Writing the early Americas. |=^A1388752 949 Order on Demand |wASIS |hJOYNER219 960 |o1 |s39.50 |uJHIS |zUSD 961 |fDMD |m138099 596 1 998 5187352
