Abstract Alain Jaubert flushes out the details, interprets the symbols, and analyzes the composition of Delacroix’s Liberty Leading the People. Why such polemics when the painting was unveiled in 1831? Was it the nudity of the armed woman? Or was it the triumphant people in this realistic setting? Since the painting did not come to the Louvre until well after Delacroix’s death, we will never know for certain. But this program makes some educated guesses from a firm, artistic standpoint.
