Abstract This 1960 World War II film, set on a South Pacific Island, is based on Philip Roth's short story "Expect the Vandals." Two soldiers are the lone survivors of a Japanese attack. The hero, Moe, a 35-year-old Jewish accountant, has to care for the injured Ken, an all-American young soldier. The two clash over personal animosity and cultural prejudice.
